Proverbs 18:21

Proverbs 18:21

As a teacher of literature, I loved to lecture my students about Proverbs 18:21, the Bible verse that talked about “those who love to talk will reap the consequences”. I focused on this verse with my students and what it could mean in a modern context.

One day, after a long lecture on this topic, one of my students came to me and told me they know what they want to talk about: their relationship with their mother. I was very excited by this turn of events because that is something I had been trying to get them to discuss for weeks. So, I went over and asked them all sorts of questions about how they felt about their mom’s behavior and what they thought she should do differently. To which they had no response. All they could do was drone on about how their mother talked too much.

I realized then how foolish it was for me to harp so much on the Bible verse and not take into consideration other factors such as the context of the verse, my perspective in life at that moment, or even the language being used.
